What to Take on a Ski Holiday

What to Take on a Ski Holiday

So you’ve booked your ski holiday and are looking forward to hitting the slopes in style (at least in some degree). What are the essentials – and non-essentials – you should consider taking with you?

Whether you’re a first-timer who needs some tips or a seasoned pro looking for a handy reminder, here are all the items we think you need to take on a ski holiday.

Packing for a Ski Holiday

Going on a ski holiday is different from any other holiday. It’s pretty easy to pack a few t-shirts and shorts for a spell in the sun, but how much do you really need to take on a winter getaway? Well, it’s best to be prepared as you never know what the weather might do.

Here’s what we’d suggest taking on a week’s ski holiday:

Travel Items

Firstly, let’s tick off everything you need for travel. This is where remembering everything is really critical!

What to take on a ski holiday - travel essentials

  • Passport (this is at the top of the list for a reason – it’s an expensive and painfully annoying item to forget!)
  • Travel details and tickets – flights, train, car hire, transfers, accommodation, ski hire, insurance. Take details and tickets for everything you’ve booked, plus your driving licence and a map if you’re driving or hiring a car
  • Money and credit cards
  • Ski Club card, if you have one, as you could get discounts in your resort
  • Mobile phone, charger and power pack

Ski or Snowboard Clothes

Staying warm is top priority, and it’s always best to have a few spares of certain items as well:

  • Waterproof, breathable ski jacket
  • Waterproof ski trousers
  • Waterproof gloves or mittens (we find that a pair of glove liners under a pair of waterproof mittens keep our fingers nice and toasty)
  • Warm hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Neck warmer
  • 2 thermal tops
  • Thermal bottoms
  • 2 fleeces
  • 3 or 4 pairs of ski or board socks
  • Sports bra/s

Ski or Snowboard Equipment

What to take on a ski holiday - ski equipment

You may be hiring ski or snowboard equipment when you get to the resort (in which case don’t forget your confirmation details), but there are some things you’ll need to take with you:

  • Your ski or snowboard boots
  • Skis or snowboard (in a bag)
  • Ski poles
  • Day pack/small rucksack
  • Helmet and goggles
  • Transceiver, shovel and probe if you’re going off piste
  • Water bottle and a flask
  • Multi-tool

Non-Ski Clothes

There are no two ways about it – skiing and snowboarding can be exhausting, and it’s wonderful to slip into some warm comfy clothes at the end of the day. You also need to consider going out and about in the resort or doing non-ski-based activities as well.

  • Jeans or trousers
  • T-shirts and tops
  • Jumpers
  • Underwear (we always take more than we think we’ll need)
  • Socks (yep, take more than you think you’ll need)
  • Jogging pants
  • Slippers (this could go in the ‘luxury extras’ list, but we really think they’re great to have!)
  • Gloves
  • Scarf
  • Shoes or boots which have a good grip for walking round the resort
  • Pyjamas

Essential Extras

These are the non-clothing items we always take with us on a ski holiday:

  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen remember to buy a high SPF as it’s easy to get burnt on the mountain without even realising
  • Lip balm with a high SPF
  • After sun or a good moisturiser
  • Swimsuit or trunks – many hotels and ski chalets have a hot tub or sauna, and even a pool. It’s well worth taking your costume so you can have a relaxing dip at the end of the day!
  • Travel adaptor
  • Book or device for reading
  • Medication – it’s a good idea to take painkillers and plasters in a small first aid kit, too
  • Ear plugs
  • High energy chocolate bars
  • Camera and charger (if you’re not using your phone), or a GoPro

What to take on a ski holiday - extras

Luxury Extras

  • Boot and hand warmers
  • Ankle, wrist and knee supports
  • Travel pillow
  • Hairdryer and straighteners
  • Cards and games
  • Muscle soaks or gels
  • Hip flask (or should this be on the ‘Essential Extras’ list…?)
  • Laptop and charger
