The ski area is slightly limited in terms of kilometres of groomed pistes on offer. It’s very obvious that the lift company is very aware of this though as there are all sorts of features that make 2 Alpes a very different ski area to ones you may have experienced elsewhere. The snow park is one of the best in Europe but also there are other man made features that offer something different for most levels of skier. The other area of note is La Grave which is accessed by a catching a lift on a “piste basher” at the top of the glacier, you then drop off the far side of the mountain and what faces you should take your breath away. A real mecca for off-piste skiers.
BEGINNERS:
Les 2 Alpes offers something that is very attractive to beginners especially in a group of mixed ability. A glacier accessed by a lift from the town centre, on which is the best nursery slope in the resort. Great for late or early season trips, beginners are usually the most affected by poor snow conditions, not here. There is also a nursery slope in the town centre if nervous beginners find the trip to the top a little intimidating. NB. Coming home from the glacier is best done by “downloading” or travelling back on the gondola as the runs home from the top are not beginner friendly.
INTERMEDIATES:
This resort offers quite a good choice of blue and red pistes which means intermediates are well catered for. The Pied De Moutet area which is separate from the main ski area is a good place to head because it tends to be much quieter than the area proper, meaning you get to take maximum advantage from the lovely blues and reds on offer.
EXPERTS:
Whilst the resort offers lots to both beginners and intermediates, we find experts are best placed to appreciate the subtleties to the resort. First of all the snow park is a sight to behold, not only is it enormous in scope but the sheer variety of features on offer is really something. As mentioned above, the access to La Grave is almost reason enough to stay here. Head up to the glacier, jump on the piste basher for quick ride up and at the top of the ridge you’ll find a ski area that will take your breath away. One mountain, two pistes. It really is a haven for freeriders, if you have a good powder day here, it will be amongst the best possible anywhere in Europe. You MUST do this with a guide, La Grave is very dangerous to the uninitiated and also remember to ensure your winter sports insurance will cover you.
