Our Top 5 Ski Chalet Holidays for 2019

A new ski season is nearly upon us, and we can’t wait to get our skis and boards out again. There are some great chalet holidays to be had in 2019, and we have the lowdown on the top five ski resorts to visit and chalets to book. We’ve looked at the top resort to visit overall, as well as the ones which best cater for après-ski lovers and non-skiers. Also included are our top ski chalets for both families and groups.

So whether you’re looking for a family or a group ski holiday for 2019 – this is the place to start!

 

1. Our Top Overall Resort for 2019

Morzine in France is our resort recommendation for a ski chalet holiday in 2019. It’s a pretty town which has plenty to do when you’re not on the slopes, making it a great choice for families and groups including non-skiers. What’s more, it’s just an hour from Geneva so there’s no long transfer time, and it has a plethora of great chalets.

Morzine is best for beginners and intermediates, and experts can rack up the miles on the huge number of pistes, stopping off for lunch in some charming Alpine villages.

2. The Best Resort for Après-Ski

We find Ischgl in the Austrian Tirol hard to beat when it comes to après-ski, and it’s on our list again for 2019. Energetic, lively and raucous, Ischgl’s nightlife simply has to be experienced. Start at the Kiwi bar above town before heading down to the Trofana Alm at the foot of the slopes, and on to the Kuhstall – our personal favourite.

For the clubbers among you, there’s Pascha (of Ibiza fame), and the enormous Trofana Arena. If you’re there to see and be seen in all your glamour, Pascha is the place to go. The Trofana Arena One is a lot more down to earth, typically Austrian – and plenty of fun.

3. Our Recommended Resort for Non-Skiers in 2019

It’s often the case that family or group ski holidays include people who don’t ski. If you’re booking a ski holiday for the 2019 season and you have non-skiers in your group, we’d recommend looking at Serre Chevalier, which we think is one of the best choices for non-skiers:

• Serre Che has a free bus to Briançon, where there are a couple of UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a lovely maze of shops and bars within the city walls
• You can visit the thermal baths in Monetier – pretty much a reason in itself to visit the area
• Winter activities abound, including ice driving, dog sledding, ice climbing, piste bashing, tobogganing, fat-biking, snowmobiling and parapenting. That’s quite the list!

 

4. The Best Ski Chalets for Families in 2019

CHALET CLEMENTINE – La Tania

A super option for families. Not only does the chalet have a good choice of rooms, including a family room with a twin bed plus bunks, but the chalet is also a short walk from the piste and ski school meeting point. The chalet company also have their own nanny programme that you can book by the half day, three-quarter day or full day. We personally really like the idea of the three-quarter day; the nanny takes the little one(s) off your hands between 11.45 and 17.00.

CHALET LES DEUX FRERES – Les Carroz

The first question most family groups ask is “how long is the transfer?” because no one wants to keep the little ones cooped up for any longer than necessary! Les Carroz is a small resort in the Grand Massif ski area. The transfer from Geneva is super short, taking just under an hour. The resort offers great skiing for all abilities with quick access to the high altitude skiing in Flaine. The lift and piste are just around the corner from the chalet, and the food served in this chalet is exceptional.

5. The Best Ski Chalets for Groups in 2019

CHALET CHERRIER – Val d’Isere

A perennial favourite for groups. First of all, Val d’Isere is the location of choice for those looking for amazing skiing and super nightlife and après-ski. The chalet is right in the centre of town and a three-minute walk to the slopes. The rooms are all of a decent size and, crucially, the living room is enormous too. So many larger chalets do not offer the social spaces that groups need to really make the holiday work.

CHALET SEEBERGER – St. Anton

If you’ve been to St. Anton before, you’ve almost certainly walked (or stumbled) past this chalet. It’s right on the high street, a few doors down from Bar Cuba and all the other nightspots on offer in this vibrant resort. The Galzig gondola is an easy five-minute walk away. The chalet is great, with good sized bedrooms and a nice dining room too. The living room is a bit on the small side, however groups going to St. Anton tend to spend very little time chilling out in the chalet!
